NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn Looks to Start-up Tech Firms to Lower Energy Use at NYCHA Developments & Other City Buildings

Speaker Quinn, Council Member Michael Nelson and the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) are heralding a new initiative that pairs start-up technology companies with municipal buildings in an effort to track, measure and ultimately reduce energy use in City-owned buildings. As part of the new Municipal Entrepreneurial Testing System (METS), 25 NYCHA buildings will participate in a residential energy tracking program to monitor energy and water usage, as well as using an EnergyScoreCard system, developed by Bright Power, to identify buildings in need of upgrades. NYCHA spends approximately $500 million a year on energy costs, said NYCHA Chairman John Rhea. "Any reduction in those costs releases funds that could be used elsewhere."
